Discussion 19: Friedrich Nietzsche

If Nietzsche is correct and there is no God and selfishness and apathy for others is the proper characteristic for humans, I would be limited in stealing, attacking and killing others. I believe that no matter how selfish we are; we are supposed to allow others to exist on their own. If our selfishness leads us to attack and killing others, then we will be working against the Natural Law, which states that whatever you do unto others, it will be done unto you. Nietzsche uses the law of natural selection, which is the survival for the fitness. But this does not mean that human beings should attack and kill each other because others are weak.  Even though I will be selfish, I would not attack people. Everybody has the right to exist and pursue happiness.

I think Nietzsche is correct in his assessment of human beings being ultimately selfish with a stronger exploiting the weaker and rising to the top. In the recordings, Nietzsche means that “To be a human is to be a beast, and to be a superior beast, a person must be able to attack, control, suppress or exploit the weak.” This is true because people exploit others in pursuit of happiness. In the recordings, Nietzsche is quoted saying, “Utility cannot account for a person that is better than another person, and the better person’s happiness.” This is true in the case of the general welfare. This is because a person that survives on welfare does not get better, in fact, overdependence on welfare makes a person weak. In the long run, the stronger ones will become stronger as those who depend on welfare become weak.

Human beings are ultimately selfish in the manner that they want the best things for themselves. For instance, in the case of capitalism, the owners of the means of production exploit the working class by paying them meager wages and salaries. For example, in the making of a trouser, the worker is paid $3 per trouser, the business owner sells the trouser at $35, and keeps all the profit after paying off expenses. The profit realized from the sale is far much greater than the $3 paid to the worker.  Since the worker has bills to pay and a family to cater for, he will continue working for the meager pay. Therefore, based on the case of capitalism, I think Nietzsche is correct in his assessment of human beings being ultimately selfish with a stronger exploiting the weaker and rising to the top.
