5 Tips for Writing a Hook-Up

A hook occurs at the beginning of an essay or a presentation. Writing a hook-up grabs the audience’s attention and makes them want to keep reading or listening. Some effective hooks include:

  1. Tell an emotionally moving story.

An emotional story appeals to the emotions of the reader or an audience. This makes the audience hooked to the essay or the presentation because they want to continue feeding their emotions.

2. Cite a surprising statistic or fact.

A surprising static or fact gets the reader or audience hooked in a story. For example, you can say one out of four people in the U.S are obese. Note that it should be a verifiable statistic.

3. Ask the audience their opinion on a controversial issue while introducing your own.

Asking the audience about their opinion on a controversial issue gets their mind spinning with ideas. Also, they anticipate an opinion from you so that they can compare it with what they have in mind. This grabs their attention because it is something they are interested in. For example, you can ask, “What is your opinion on gay marriages?” You’ll evoke different emotions as the audience try to come up with different opinions.

4. Use humor

Humor creates a bond, a sense of closeness. It also releases the tension and the audience becomes relaxed and eager to hear or read the essay. If used appropriately, humor leaves the audience happy. However, be careful with humor during a presentation because it may backfire. Use humor if you know the audience well.

5. Introduce a thoughtful quote.

You can introduce a thoughtful quote when writing a hook-up. This keeps them waiting for more that will help clarify the quote. You can say, Noah Yuval Harari, says “You are more likely to die from eating more than from eating less” when introducing a topic on obesity.
